Why Is Everyone Talking About This? How Trends Actually Start
Something is everywhere this morning and had zero presence last night. It feels spontaneous. It almost never is. Trends follow a pattern with three distinct stages.
Stage one: the origin pocket
Every trend starts inside a small community with its own inside jokes — a fandom, a subreddit, a group chat that got out. The original post is usually unremarkable-looking; what matters is that the community found it remixable. Removable parts are the requirement: a phrase that fits any context, an image that works as a reaction.
Stage two: the bridge
Someone with a bigger audience carries it out of the pocket. Not the original — usually a remix, because second versions travel better than originals. This is the jump from "inside joke" to "thing you have to explain to coworkers", and it typically takes 24 to 72 hours.
Stage three: the mutation
Once mainstream accounts adopt the format, the trend stops being about the original joke at all. It becomes a container. When you start seeing brand accounts use it, the trend is finished — commercially successful, culturally over.
The practical takeaway
If you want to know why something is trending right now, do not read the biggest post — find the earliest one. That is what our trending coverage does: origin first, noise later.
